Your next customer may never see your website
In the UK, AI answers now sit on top of search and fewer people click through. Here is how a Central Texas business gets named in the answer.
For twenty years the game was simple. Someone searched, they saw ten blue links, they clicked one. If your website showed up and looked good, you got the call.
That game is ending, and the UK is a year ahead of us in watching it happen.
What the numbers say
Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, publishes a yearly study of how people use the internet. Its 2025 edition found that around 30% of Google searches now show an AI-written overview at the top, and 53% of UK adults say they often see these AI summaries.
Then there are the people skipping Google entirely. ChatGPT had 1.8 billion UK visits in the first eight months of 2025, up from 368 million in the same stretch of 2024. Gemini, Claude and Perplexity all at least doubled their UK traffic over the year.
The part every business owner should read twice: Ofcom found early evidence that people who see an AI summary are less likely to click through to the original website.
The answer is the new storefront. If you are not in the answer, you are not in the running.
What it means here
You have already seen the AI box at the top of Google. Your customers have too. When someone in Hutto asks “who does vehicle wraps near me” or “best roofer in Round Rock,” a growing share of them will take the first answer they are given and never scroll.
AI tools build those answers from what they can find and trust about you. A clear list of services. The towns you serve. Real reviews. Plain answers to the questions customers actually ask. A Google Business Profile that matches your website, word for word.
The businesses that get named are not always the biggest. They are the ones that are easiest for a machine to understand.
Your first move this month
- Open ChatGPT and Google. Ask the three questions a customer would ask about your type of business in your town.
- Write down who gets named. If it is not you, look at what those businesses have that you do not.
- Fix your Google Business Profile first. Every service, every town, current hours, current photos.
- Add a plain FAQ page to your website that answers those exact three questions in the words a customer would use.
That is an afternoon of work, and it puts you ahead of most of your competitors, who have not noticed the ground moving yet.
Want it done for you?
This is the kind of work Fingerprint Ideas does every week for Central Texas businesses: websites built so search engines and AI tools can read them, Google profiles that match, and FAQ pages written in your voice.
