In Europe, the bag is part of the brand
Most European shoppers now prefer paper packaging and say they buy more from stores that drop plastic. A small shop can make that its edge.
The last thing a customer touches when they leave your shop is the bag. The first thing they touch when your order arrives is the box. In Europe, shoppers have started judging the business by both.
What the numbers say
Two Sides, a paper industry group, surveys thousands of consumers every year about packaging. Keep the source in mind, since they have a stake in paper. But the direction of the 2025 European results is hard to ignore:
- 62% of European shoppers want online orders to arrive in paper packaging, up from 61% the year before.
- 53% say they are actively using more paper packaging and would buy more from a retailer committed to removing plastic.
- 63% prefer paper bags because they are compostable, and 56% because they are the easiest to recycle.
The point is not paper versus plastic. It is that shoppers have started noticing packaging at all, and rewarding the businesses that get it right.
Packaging used to be a cost. For a small shop, it is now one of the simplest ways to look established.
What it means here
Central Texas is full of boutiques, bakeries, coffee shops, salons and makers who hand over a product every single day. Most of them use whatever plain bag or box the supplier had in stock.
That is the opening. A printed kraft bag, a custom mailer box or a simple branded sticker turns something every customer already holds into a reason to remember you, and to post about you. The big chains are slow to change this. A local shop can do it next month.
Your first move this month
- Pick your single most common hand-off. The checkout bag, the to-go cup sleeve, the shipping box.
- Swap it for a branded paper version. Even a one-color logo on kraft makes the jump from generic to yours.
- Add one line that tells the customer it is recyclable. People like to know.
- Mention the change at the counter and on social. Customers who care about this will tell their friends.
